Life Lessons from the Mat: #3

Lessons from the Mat is a continuing series of the top 10 things that I have learned since beginning Bikram Yoga. Enjoy!

#3. Move towards the “direction of your intention”

Most Bikram studios have 30 or 60 day challenges in the beginning of the year.  I still remember my first challenge in 2002 and the daunting task of practicing yoga every day.  I wondered how on earth I was going to complete such a lofty goal.  I really wanted to see how my body would change and open with this level of practice so I started the journey.  I decided to drop the idea of a “goal” in favor of “moving towards the direction of my intention”.  Somehow, it just seem like it would easier to accomplish.  Well, I did complete the challenge and this phrase shifted my thinking on how to grow in my practice and my life.

Ok, and “now the rest of the story”.  As a Bikram Yoga Instructor, I see the look on student’s faces when you ask them to begin a posture that is outside of their comfort zone.  They are usually looking around the room to find the student who has been practicing for years so they can point out to me that they cannot perform the posture like them.  I try to reassure them that all of our bodies are different but generally ask the students to “move towards the direction of their intentions”.  Something just seems to shift when the expectation is moved from perfection to trying.  Just taking the first step is sometimes the hardest part of the journey.

Amy Clement is a certified Bikram Yoga Instructor and owns Bikram Yoga Lake Norman. She has practiced Bikram Yoga for over 16 years and still considers herself to be a beginner.
